The Denver Broncos hired George Paton as their new general manager, the team announced Wednesday.

The former Minnesota Vikings assistant general manager agreed to a six-year deal, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Paton spent 14 years with the Vikings working closely alongside general manager Rick Spielman. He had been offered other GM positions over the years, but Denver stood out, Schefter adds. As part of the interview process, Paton reportedly also met with Broncos vice president of strategic initiatives Brittany Bowlen.

"I feel like this team is a sleeping giant," said Paton. "For me, it is the right place and the right time for this opportunity."

Paton was key in helping Minnesota draft future Pro Bowlers Harrison Smith, Eric Kendricks, Dalvin Cook, and, more recently, Justin Jefferson.

The Denver job became available after John Elway gave up the position and final say on roster management a week ago. The Broncos legend spent the past 10 seasons as the team's GM.

With the role filled, the Broncos can begin to address some key offseason issues, such as whether to exercise the team option on star linebacker Von Miller and their plan at quarterback.
