The Pittsburgh Steelers are likely to promote quarterbacks coach Matt Canada to offensive coordinator, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

Canada also interviewed with the Miami Dolphins for their offensive coordinator position, but he's expected to remain in Pittsburgh to take over for Randy Fichtner, Rapoport adds.

Canada logged extensive experience working with college offenses prior to the Steelers bringing him in before the 2020 season, serving as an offensive coordinator with Maryland, LSU, and Pittsburgh, among others.

Many NFL coaches have consulted with Canada in the past due to his knowledge of emerging trends in college, Rapoport notes. He's been known to incorporate pre-snap motion into his offenses.

Canada's promotion comes after the Steelers parted ways with Fichtner following three seasons. Fichtner enjoyed a successful first year with the team in 2018, and his unit ranked fourth in yardage. But he fell out of favor in recent campaigns. Pittsburgh's offense finished 30th in yardage in 2019, only slightly improving to 24th in 2020.

The Steelers are coming off a disappointing season, winning 11 straight to start the year before dropping five of their last six contests, including a playoff defeat to the Cleveland Browns.
