Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields announced Monday that he'll forgo his senior season and declare for the 2021 NFL Draft.

Fields is slated to be one of the top overall prospects in this year's class. He's in contention to be the second quarterback off the board after Trevor Lawrence.

"My path to The Ohio State University was not a direct one, but I could not have asked for a better final destination," Fields said in a statement. "I knew this was a special place the moment I stepped on campus. ... Buckeye Nation, you immediately adopted me as one of your own, and for that, I am forever grateful."

The dual-threat passer began his college career at Georgia as a five-star freshman, serving as a backup to Jake Fromm. Fields transferred to Ohio State a year later and spent the last two seasons leading the Buckeyes.

Despite his short tenure, Fields ranks second in Ohio State history with 63 passing touchdowns and sits fourth in total scores. He also won two Big Ten championships and finished third in Heisman voting last season.

The quarterback is viewed as a high-level prospect with the ability to impact the game with his arm and legs. He's likely locked into the top half of the first round and could be a top-five selection.

The New York Jets, Atlanta Falcons, and Carolina Panthers are among teams with high draft slots that could target Fields this April.
