Why have I got a symbolic link to /etc/localtime in my root directory?

I just found it and I certainly didn't create it. It must have been put there by some package script or other. But what purpose does it serve? Is there some program that expects to find it there?

I thought glibc-zoneinfo was the likeliest culprit but I've checked its installation script and it doesn't mention this link.
