The Washington Football Team announced Friday that it hired San Francisco 49ers vice president of player personnel Martin Mayhew as its new general manager.

It was reported Tuesday that Washington was finalizing a deal to hire Marty Hurney as its GM. Instead, Hurney will serve as the executive vice president of player personnel, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Hurney, a former Panthers GM, worked with Washington head coach Ron Rivera in Carolina. He and Mayhew will both report to Rivera in their new roles.

Washington reportedly requested an interview with Mayhew two weeks ago. The 55-year-old, who won a Super Bowl with Washington as a cornerback in 1991, has been an NFL executive since 2001.

Mayhew served as Detroit Lions general manager for eight seasons from 2008-2015.

Before adding Mayhew and Hurney to its front office, Washington also interviewed Tennessee Titans vice president of player personnel Ryan Cowden, Atlanta Falcons director of football operations Nick Polk, and Los Angeles Chargers director of player personnel JoJo Wooden, according to Keim.
