Too many flavours

G'day all
I probably will upset some die hard linux fans but my experience with linux distros have not been great. Every time I try it , it does not last long before I run into software update issues, or installing packages and having to download software via command line because it is not found in the repositories, old blogs and guides on how to only to find out that command does not work anymore r running into issues.
I am baffled why the linux distro community can't get together and build 3 distros that actually works.
Example today, I downloaded Mint and straight away after going to the software updates there are packages that could not be updated. This is a clean install no other software installed.
Maybe I am doing something wrong but my believe is that linux will not replace windows if this road continues .But that is only my view which does not count for much but I am not a complete novice to linux and I can only imagine a beginners experience with it. If I download a distro for a old laptop 2gig RAM which is the distro with the most complete software repositories.
Thanks
SJ
