Report: Texans may add McCown, Lovie Smith to Culley's coaching staff
The Houston Texans have planned to hire first-time head coach David Culley and are looking to surround him with experienced voices.
The Texans are targeting veteran quarterback Josh McCown and former NFL and college head coach Lovie Smith for Culley's coaching staff, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo.
Smith is in Houston to meet with the team, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Culley has 27 years of coaching experience in the NFL as an assistant head coach, wide receivers coach, and passing game coordinator, but he's never held the top job.
McCown had a prior meeting with the Texans about the head coaching vacancy. The 41-year-old was an NFL quarterback from 2002 to 2019.
Smith was the Chicago Bears' head coach from 2004 to 2012 and led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2014 to 2015 before coaching at Illinois from 2016 to 2018.
