slackwarearm-current RPi official display backlight.

Hi folks, new to most of this so bear with me.
Been running slackwarearm-current on a RPi 3B+ for a while now. Recently added the official 7" touch display and all seems well. Updated current a couple days ago and now at runlevel 3, the backlight no longer shuts off when the display blanks. Updated sarpi kernel and hacks today, and brought install up to date with current. Still not shutting off the display.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to figure out what caused this change in behavior? I haven't found much info about this display and in particular with slackwarearm.
Writing a '1' or '0' to /sys/class/backlight/rpi_backlight does turn the display backlight on and off, but this is not a good solution.
Thanks.
edit: As I'm sitting here reading other threads, the backlight shut off when the screen blanked. 10 minute timeout? Now I'm more confused.
