Report: Rams discussing Goff trade with multiple teams
The Los Angeles Rams are talking to multiple teams about a potential trade involving quarterback Jared Goff, a source told The Athletic's Jourdan Rodrigue.
L.A. is reportedly considering acquiring Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, which would require moving Goff and his four-year, $134-million contract. Stafford formally requested a trade from Detroit after 12 seasons, and he's expected to have many suitors.
Trading Goff would lead to $22.2 million in dead money, but it would also save the Rams $12.4 million of the passer's $34.6-million cap hit next season, according to Spotrac.
However, the Rams could find it difficult to win the Stafford sweepstakes because they don't own a first-round pick in 2021.
Goff, the No. 1 pick in 2016, has struggled over the last two seasons after helping Los Angeles to the Super Bowl in 2018.
The 26-year-old has thrown for 8,590 yards and 42 touchdowns against 29 interceptions (plus 17 fumbles) over the last two campaigns after back-to-back Pro Bowl years earned him his mammoth extension.
Head coach Sean McVay and general manager Les Snead both didn't commit to Goff moving forward after the conclusion of the 2020 season, which ended with the Rams losing to the Green Bay Packers in the divisional round.
It was previously reported the NFC West team was considering making Goff compete for the starting job with John Wolford.
Wolford started Week 17 and the wild-card round after Goff underwent thumb surgery, though the latter was forced back into the contest against the Seattle Seahawks after his backup was hurt early in the game.
