Running Linux within OSX without dual boot?

Is there another option for running Linux next to OSX on a 2015 Mac?
1) I know there's virtualization and dual boot but is there anything that utilises the fact that their both unix systems maybe?
I looked up chroot but apparently it's not possible.
2) Is there a way to install linux into an OSX or Windows partition.
3) Is there a way to boot off USB?
As you can tell, I'm running out of disk space.
