vlc installed but not loading

Using SL 7 [red hat derived] and installed vlc [and re-installed and re-installed] but while it comes up for use, when the dvd starts to load it doesn't complete and just hangs or screen options even close.
Does it need additional codexes or other accessories? I have no idea what else to try.
