Man found dead in MacNab Street North apartment
Hamilton police are investigating the city's first homicide of 2021 after a 35-year-old man was found dead inside a central Hamilton apartment Monday morning.
The man, whose identity has not yet been released, was discovered in his apartment at 94 MacNab St. N. around 9 a.m. Monday by the building's landlord, said Staff Sgt. Steve Bereziuk of the major crime unit.
Patrol officers immediately called in detectives, as the death did not appear natural." Both major crime, which investigates homicides, and the central criminal investigations branch, which investigates other sudden deaths, responded. Police say it is a homicide.
Bereziuk said he wouldn't comment on what appeared suspicious as it's possible only the killer or killers know that information. He also declined to comment on any evidence in the victim's apartment.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
So far, police have no witnesses in the homicide, he said, despite canvassing in the area Monday.
It's believed the victim had been there for at least a day before being discovered, Bereziuk said. Police are asking anyone with cameras in the area, or anyone who saw anything suspicious as far back as last Thursday to call police.
The apartment unit is above a former karaoke bar at the corner of MacNab and Vine streets, a block south of Cannon Street West. Happy Hourz Pub closed permanently in August.
Police will again be in the area canvassing for witnesses and video Tuesday.
Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Dave Brewster at 905-546-4067.
