How do I use a function in (neo-)mutt?

I'm reading through the documentation of mutt and it suggests to run this or that command/function. But how do I do that?

I found several explanations on how to bind a function to a key but what should I do to run a function that is not bound to a key and that I simply want to test once?

I'm sure there is something like a command-mode that I can't find... I tried ":" as in vim and indeed I can type stuff after the : but if I hit enter it always complains that this command is unknown so ":" must relate to other commands than the commands mentioned in the documentation.latest?d=yIl2AUoC8zA latest?i=JzAHbbwV-cg:V4KcS3BNaNI:F7zBnMy latest?i=JzAHbbwV-cg:V4KcS3BNaNI:V_sGLiP latest?d=qj6IDK7rITs latest?i=JzAHbbwV-cg:V4KcS3BNaNI:gIN9vFwJzAHbbwV-cg
