LinuxMint | OS "forgets" user passwords
by FrizzledOldButt from LinuxQuestions.org on (#5DQY5)
OK, this is a new one on me:
Acer V5 (i3) notebook, 4G RAM, good HDD and battery. There is no rj45 ethernet port, so using wireless only.
Installed LinuxMint. The first user's password is an absolute known.
Shut the box down and do a cold restart and the user's password no longer validates. Only option is (probably) to do a reset from grub menu screen, but we don't seem to be able to invoke that. On boot pressing ESC flashes the screen and freezes the boot.
Only option is to repeat the above from a cold start and fresh install of the OS.
The sequence then repeats.
NB: Also, wireless security keys are also forgotten on a cold reboot.
I have tried Ubuntu and Debian, but the result is the same. Understandably.
Any ideas what might be going here?
