Do we need a steam emulation ?

Thinking about the 'importance of wine' and the arguments against the windows monoculture i wonder if the same argument could hold for steam monoculture. Wine offers a windows platform alternative , like a lifepod for windows app universe. I mean if a microsoft monopoly falls down a user application would lose possible data and an application.
So should we have lifepods for linux binary games? Or we should accept that a game is a flick and we dont care since its creator didnt care .
So what happens in case of steam. Someone has in linux spent time and has a steam library of many games. Now what happens if that fails?
Sidetracking on a larger philosophically angle , maybe .. the games that will survive longest are the ones with libre code. The libre code of a game increases the 'phoenix' regeneration ability of a game in case of platform catastrophies.
