Halton Regional Police are investigating a serious incident at Fortinos in Oakville that has a three-year-old girl in hospital.

The incident occurred in the Fortinos parking lot at Dundas Street West and Neyagawa Boulevard around 5 p.m. Sunday (Feb. 7).

Halton Region Paramedics rushed the child to McMaster Children's Hospital with serious injuries after she was struck by an SUV being driven by a 38-year-old woman.

Halton police said in a news release the child ran out in front of the moving vehicle.

Halton police say the vehicle and drive remained on scene.

Early reports indicate the girl was hit after leaving the grocery store and was running ahead of a parent when she was struck.

"So tragic. My heart is breaking," said Clara Maconnell, who was just arriving in the parking lot.

Police said several shoppers saw the incident but investigators are still looking for witnesses.

Anyone with information can call police at 905-825-4747 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
