Washington's Heinicke signs 2-year extension reportedly worth $8.75M

The Washington Football Team agreed to a two-year extension with quarterback Taylor Heinicke, the club announced Wednesday. The deal is worth $8.75 million and includes incentives based on the number of games started, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

His contract extension gives Washington some security under center. Alex Smith, who led all QBs on the team in games played, has an uncertain future, while Kyle Allen isn't under contract for 2021. Head coach Ron Rivera also noted earlier in February that Washington will look at all its options to improve its quarterback situation.

Heinicke joined Washington late in the 2020 season but performed admirably when called upon. The 27-year-old started the club's wild-card game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and threw for 306 yards and a touchdown. He also added a rushing touchdown in the contest.

The Washington signal-caller was just the fifth undrafted quarterback to ever record a passing and rushing touchdown in a playoff game, joining Jeff Garcia, Kurt Warner, Dave Krieg, and Steve Young (taken in supplemental draft).
