XFCE doesn't load properly / window manager stops working

• compositor doesn't load anymore and window manager doesn't respond to keystrokes at all, other parts of XFCE also don't get loaded anymore.

• rolling back root using btrfs didn't anything - so it must have something to with the configuration in /home, I guess

• I think installing qt5ct is what caused the issue. I did it because kvantum QT themes didn't apply anymore, although they did in a minimal window manager without qt5ct. https://14um.net/exciting-tips/linux...xfce-in-linux/

any idea how to troubleshoot this issue?

is there some log I can look at to find what is happening?
