Report: NFL may push back franchise-tag deadline
The NFL is discussing pushing back Tuesday's franchise-tag deadline due to uncertainty over the 2021 salary-cap number, sources told ESPN's Dan Graziano.
If the league doesn't announce the 2021 cap number on Monday, the tag deadline will be delayed, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.
The NFL set a salary-cap floor of $180 million in February, but the league and NFLPA are continuing to work toward finalizing a final figure. The players' union prefers to wait until television deals are finalized before announcing a cap number, Graziano adds.
The franchise-tag deadline was delayed last year until the start of the legal tampering window for free agents due to the collective bargaining agreement not being agreed upon. Teams suspect that could happen again, according to ESPN's Field Yates.
Denver Broncos safety Justin Simmons and Washington Football Team guard Brandon Scherff are the only players who've been officially franchised tagged. Other candidates for the tag include Dak Prescott, Chris Godwin, and Taylor Moton.
