It appears the Philadelphia Eagles believe their 2021 quarterback is already on the roster.

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie has instructed his team to prioritize making Jalen Hurts successful next season rather than create competition, sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Philadelphia agreed to trade Carson Wentz - its starter for the last five years - to the Indianapolis Colts in a deal that will be finalized when the new league year begins.

The trade left many speculating whether the Eagles and new head coach Nick Sirianni would draft a quarterback in the first round this April, but Hurts saw the move as a vote of confidence.

"I think it was just an opportunity for me," Hurts said on the "Adam Schefter Podcast." on Monday. "I think it shows the trust and what they think I can be as a player, so I want to prove them right."

He added, "Nothing changes for me and my mindset, going in every day trying to get better as a player. Be the best leader I can be. Impact the guys around me, and, ultimately, it's just about winning football games and being consistent."

Hurts started four games as a rookie after Wentz was benched. He finished 1-3 but provided Philadelphia with a much-needed spark in an upset of the New Orleans Saints in his first extended action.

The Eagles are still expected to add a signal-caller this offseason, as the 2020 second-round pick is the only quarterback currently on their roster.
