Report: Jets' Maye assigned franchise tag

The New York Jets have placed the franchise tag on safety Marcus Maye, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

While franchise tag values haven't been locked in yet, the safety tender is expected to be worth about $10.5 million, according to Schefter.

The Jets will get until July 15 to work out a multi-year deal with Maye. If the two sides don't reach an agreement, he'll only be allowed to play under the fully-guaranteed one-year tender.

Maye stuffed the stat sheet after taking over for Jamal Adams as the Jets' top safety. He played every defensive snap in 2020 while recording 88 tackles, 11 pass breakups, two interceptions, two forced fumbles, and two sacks.

Maye, who turns 28 on Tuesday, is the second safety to receive the franchise tag this year, joining Justin Simmons of the Denver Broncos. Teams get until Tuesday afternoon to use the tag, though that deadline reportedly could be pushed back while the league and the players' union try to finalize the 2021 salary cap.
