Report: Chargers' Henry not getting tagged, set to become free agent
The Los Angeles Chargers told tight end Hunter Henry that he won't be getting franchise tagged, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Henry will hit free agency and projects to be one of the top tight ends on the open market.
The Chargers assigned Henry the franchise tag last year, and the tight end played the 2020 campaign on his guaranteed tender worth $10.6 million. A second designation for Henry would have cost Los Angeles a 20% pay raise.
Last week, general manager Tom Telesco pointed to the salary cap decrease as a major obstacle for retaining Henry.
The 26-year-old recorded 613 receiving yards along with a career-best 60 receptions last season. Injuries have hindered Henry throughout his young career. A tibia plateau fracture in his left knee sidelined him for four games in 2019, and he missed the entire 2018 campaign after suffering a torn ACL.
Henry has 2,322 receiving yards and 21 touchdowns since entering the NFL in 2016.
