The Chicago Bears placed a franchise tag on wide receiver Allen Robinson, the team announced Tuesday.

Robinson was previously projected to be one of the biggest names among free-agent receivers.

The wideout's future in Chicago was murky heading into the offseason. The Bears reportedly haven't discussed an extension with him since September, but general manager Ryan Pace said last week that the team could tag Robinson, describing him as a good player he'd like to retain.

After spending the first four years of his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Robinson joined the Bears as a free agent in 2018. He's remained a dominant receiving threat despite the team's lack of consistency at quarterback. The 27-year-old racked up 2,397 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns over the last two seasons.

Robinson's 102 receptions last season were a career high and also tied for second-most in Bears history.

Chicago will have until July 15 to agree on a contract extension with Robinson.
