no ethernet or sound after mint update

So I just spent a couple of hours trying to fix my linux mint install after I foolishly decided to update it. I thought the update might fix an error I was having trying to install 'spek' from source but it didn't. Even though I'm using linux for years I don't have a clue about it so when i rebooted after the update I was left with no internet and no sound.
I spent at least an hour looking around for people having the same problem and typing in commands and what not but had no idea about rolling back the kernel. I happened to see the message in the update manager under kernels. So i tried that, couldn't get the Grub menu to display but eventually I did and have the kernel booting from the previous one. I had to reinstall the nvidia drivers but at least the sound and internet was back.
So my question is this, can I never update my kernel again or is it just that it is too new and the devices have to be added to it?
