Man charged with aggravated assault after early morning stabbing in downtown Hamilton

A Hamilton man has been charged with aggravated assault after an alleged disturbance in downtown Hamilton early Wednesday morning, police say.

In a release, Hamilton police said just after midnight, officers responded to a disturbance involving several" males in the area of York Boulevard and Bay Street North - near the Salvation Army's Booth Centre.

Police said two men were involved in an altercation, and one of the men sustained numerous stab wounds to the left side of his body. He was transported to hospital.

Hamilton paramedic Supt. Dave Thompson told The Spectator paramedics were initially called to the men's shelter at 12:30 a.m. and found a 44-year-old male victim suffering from stab wounds. He was rushed to a local trauma centre in critical condition."

The victim remains in hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Thompson told The Spectator that shortly after the victim was transported to hospital, a 43-year-old man was also transported to hospital.

Police said through investigation, Dayaram Valmiki, 43, of Hamilton, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault.

He appeared in court on Wednesday, police said.
