No Desktop Icons

System is Devuan Ceres and XFCE, updated every couple of days.
After a couple of crashes caused in some way by KDE my system would boot as far as XFCE being up, the task bar was properly populated, XFCE Notes OK and Yaquake behaving normally.
But no icons on the desktop! (On VT7)
However I can still launch progams from the start menu.
If I log out, switch to VT1 and log in, then run startx, I get a normal looking system.
Could anybody suggest why this happens and how can I fix it?
