Saints' Payton: I think we're set with Winston, Hill at QB
The New Orleans Saints believe Drew Brees' replacement is already on their roster.
Head coach Sean Payton is optimistic the recently re-signed Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill can step up in 2021 after Brees announced his retirement Sunday.
"I think we are," Payton said Tuesday on "The Dan Patrick Show" when asked if the Saints are set at the quarterback position.
"There will be a few calls we make, but our goal coming into the offseason was to, obviously, re-sign Jameis - Taysom played for us in four games last year. (We'll) let those guys go to work. I'm excited about those two."
However, Payton refused to name a starter.
"I've told both of them, 'The two of you are gonna compete for this position,'" he added.
Hill was Brees' backup last season. He appeared in eight contests and won three of his four starts while throwing for 928 yards and four touchdowns against two interceptions.
Winston attempted just 11 passes during four brief appearances with New Orleans. But the 27-year-old has more experience than Hill after starting for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2015-2019.
