The Kansas City Chiefs are signing offensive lineman Kyle Long to a one-year deal worth up to $5 million, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Long will make his return to the field after retiring from football ahead of the 2020 season.

Long, 32, previously spent seven seasons as a member of the Chicago Bears before walking away from the game.

Injuries derailed Long's career prior to his retirement. The Oregon alum missed 26 games over three seasons. A hip injury limited him to four games in 2019.

Now healthy, Long joins fellow free-agent addition Joe Thuney along Kansas City's revamped offensive line.

The Chiefs recently released tackles Mitchell Schwartz and Eric Fisher to create cap space and improve their offensive front. Center Austin Reiter is expected to find a new home via free agency. Long could compete with returning guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, who opted out of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
