The seven-year pro is signing a two-year deal worth up to $13.2 million, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.
Van Noy spent three-and-a-half seasons with the Patriots from 2016 to 2019 and won two Super Bowls with the franchise.
The soon-to-be 30-year-old joined the Miami Dolphins in 2020 and was surprised to learn the club released him after the season.
Van Noy now joins a handful of players heading back to Foxboro after the team had an uncharacteristic 7-9 season and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2008.
Quarterback Cam Newton, defensive lineman Deatrich Wise, tackle Trent Brown, and center Ted Karras are also returning to New England. The Patriots could also re-sign up to eight players who opted out of the 2020 season, including linebacker Dont'a Hightower and safety Patrick Chung.
