no boot with sata dvd drive connected

My new #linux #computer will not boot if a sata #DVD_drive is attached.
It will get as far as the bios screen asking for f2 or delete keys to be pressed. Doing so has no affect.
I have tried two different DVD drives, two different sata cables, and two nearly identical computers and
the result is the same. Computer boots and runs fine with the DVD drive removed.
I would appreciate any help with this issue.
