Backing up a home server?
by nomadic101 from LinuxQuestions.org on (#5FHSE)
Hi
I'm planning to set up a 2-drive debian based headless home/file-server (no raid, LAN only). What would be the simplest method of backing up the OS? For example, debian OS installed on ssd, and data on HD.
I'd like to be able to snapshot/backup the installed OS onto the HD. Maybe similar to Timeshift. Or I've read a little about using LVM and being able to restore, though not sure if that's the best option.
I have basic experience of linux/command line/running a server, what would be a good approach for backing up the OS setup for a home server? (I'm not concerning my data on the HD as that will be backed up on the cloud).
EDIT: As I'm a newbie, and will no doubt mess things up at some point, rather than having to reinstall the whole OS and already working software again, being able to restore from a backup/snapshot seems like a good idea?
Thanks for any advice
