Steelers release Steven Nelson

The Pittsburgh Steelers have released cornerback Steven Nelson after two seasons, the team announced Tuesday.

The Steelers reportedly gave Nelson permission to seek a trade before they terminated his contract.

Nelson took to Twitter shortly before his release seeking a resolution to his standing with the club.

Nelson was entering the final season of a three-year, $25.5-million contract, and his dismissal will save the Steelers $8.25 million in cap space, according to ESPN's Dan Graziano.

The 28-year-old signed with Pittsburgh after spending the first four years of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs. He paired alongside Joe Haden in the Steelers' secondary and allowed only 969 yards and five touchdowns when targeted over his two seasons with the team, according to PFF.

The Steelers have now lost two cornerbacks this offseason after Mike Hilton joined the Cincinnati Bengals in free agency. Pittsburgh did manage to re-sign versatile cornerback Cameron Sutton, who could take over Nelson's spot on the boundary.
