Corey Davis: My understanding is Sam Darnold will be Jets' starting QB
New York Jets wide receiver Corey Davis is under the impression he will be catching passes from Sam Darnold next season.
"Obviously, I'm coming with my understanding that Sam is the guy," Davis said Tuesday, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.
"That doesn't scare me away at all. I've seen Sam do great things, and I have all the belief in him. Whatever direction they decide to go, it's on me to make sure that I'm ready."
The Jets brought in Davis on a three-year, $37.5-million deal this offseason to be the top receiving option, but who he'll be catching passes from remains unclear.
General manager Joe Douglas previously said he will take trade calls for Darnold, but the team hasn't made a final decision on his future. The Jets own the second pick in this year's draft and will reportedly evaluate the quarterback class before deciding the former third overall pick's fate.
"(Darnold's) obviously a great leader. I've heard a few things just talking to guys on the team. I'm looking forward to playing with him. He's a competitor. Obviously, we can both learn from each other. He's young, and we're both growing. We can grow together," Davis added.
Darnold set new career lows in passer rating (72.7) and yards per game (184) during the 2020 season.
Meanwhile, Davis arrives in New York after a productive season in 2020. He recorded a career-high 984 receiving yards during his final campaign with the Tennessee Titans.
"I do consider myself a (No. 1 wide receiver) ... I feel like I can do it all. I feel like I'm a 1,000-yard receiver," Davis said.
New York has not had a 1,000-yard receiver since Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker eclipsed the figure during the 2015 season.
