bootable incremental backup?

I understand it's definitely two different concepts, but having a machine with potentially a third HD onboard, I sometimes dream of cloning my system disk in order to coldly switch the boot volume in case of failure (or... silly upgrade error)

I'm currently using utilities like 'Backintime' for incremental document backups, and 'Timeshift', an rsync-based GUI that does the same for system files, on regularly connected disks.

But ideally I'd love something doing this, regularly, onto the third disk...

I suspect there'd be a lot of complex stuff to be done with the partitioning, grub etc. that is potentially beyond my competence!

TIA!
