The COVID-19 vaccine will be available as early as Saturday in pharmacies in Hamilton, Burlington and Haldimand and Norfolk.

The province announced 21 pharmacies in Hamilton, seven in Burlington and three in Haldimand and Norfolk will give out the AstraZeneca vaccine to residents aged 55 and over.

Canada's National Advisory Committee on Immunization has recommended AstraZeneca not be given to those under the age of 55 due to a potential link to blood clots.

The province is also expanding the vaccine rollout to family doctors, although details for this area are not available yet.

Hamilton has been part of a pilot project already that saw select family doctors vaccinate 4,500 Hamiltonians aged 60 and older from March 13 to April 2.

The primary-care clinics vaccinated those specifically chosen by the McMaster Family Health Team, the Hamilton Family Health Team and the city's community health centres in partnership with public health.

There was no way for patients to register themselves to the family doctor clinics.

In contrast, residents can book their own appointment at the pharmacies starting April 3 at covid-19.ontario.ca/vaccine-locations.
