/boot and /boot/efi

Hi, I'm still in the process of learning systemd coming from systemV server user.
I noticed that there are two boot filesystems mounted on the servers /boot and /boot/efi, understand that the machine is already using UEFI but would like to know to understand more since the OS will be using /boot/efi already why does when I try to comment out in fstab the /boot the server can still boot though the kernel images are in /boot partition?
