Five of 17 COVID outbreaks in Hamilton schools now over, public health reports
Five of 17 school-related COVID-19 outbreaks are now over, Hamilton public health reported Monday.
The outbreaks declared over include Dr. J. Edgar Davey Elementary School, which had eight cases including possible variant cases, Greensville Elementary School, which had three cases including possible variant cases, Westview Elementary School, which had three cases, St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Elementary School, which had three cases, and St. James the Apostle Catholic Elementary School - a bus-related outbreak - which had two cases including possible variant cases.
Twelve school-related outbreaks are still ongoing.
The outbreaks come as Hamilton's public board and the union representing high school teachers are calling on the province to prioritize inoculating teachers.
Meanwhile, on Monday, Hamilton reported 91 new cases of COVID-19 and one new death. The person who died was in their 80s or older. A total of 322 people have now died with COVID in Hamilton.
There are 820 active COVID cases within the city, down from 849 Sunday. The city last surpassed 1,000 active cases Jan. 13. The seven-day average shows Hamilton is reporting 105 new COVID cases a day.
As of Monday, the city has recorded 1,090 possible variant cases, which is nine more cases than Sunday. A total of 15 cases are confirmed to be the U.K. variant B.1.1.7.
There are 91 COVID patients in Hamilton hospitals.
A total of 46 outbreaks remain active within the city. Four new outbreaks publicly declared Monday include Kelly's Residence on Main Street East, with one case in a resident, NVK Nurseries Inc. in Dundas, with five cases in staff, Village of Wentworth Heights, with one case in a staff member, and Central Daycare Centre, with six cases in students, one in staff and possible variant cases.
An outbreak at Juravinski's Hospital's F3 acute medicine unit is now over. It saw 54 cases and eight deaths since it was declared on March 12.
