Report: Edelman doubtful to play entire 2021 season due to knee issue
Julian Edelman likely won't be able to play the entire 2021 season due to a lingering knee issue that sidelined him for most of the last campaign, a source told Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald.
Knee injuries have hampered the New England Patriots receiver for the better part of two years, and the condition is considered to be chronic, Guregian also notes.
Edelman doesn't intend to retire. But surgery won't solve the underlying issue, the source told Guregian. If he does play, it's unlikely the veteran will be able to perform at full speed toward the end of the season.
The 34-year-old was placed on the injured reserve last October after undergoing surgery to alleviate pain and swelling. He was unable to return to the field following the procedure.
New England may face a difficult decision if the club deems Edelman unfit to consistently contribute. Bill Belichick's squad added multiple offensive weapons throughout free agency, including Hunter Henry and Nelson Agholor.
There's one year left on the wideout's current contract. The Patriots would owe Edelman $2.6 million after a trade or releasing him, but the move would also free up about $3.5 million in cap space.
