Brand new Battery not charging at all - Sony Vaio

Hi all,

Recently I purchased an older Sony Vaio VGN-CS31 Laptop which had windows 10 Home installed on it. The seller told me that the battery had run out of a charge a year prior and would only work with the external power supply unless I replaced the battery. I wasn't too concerned about it since I was going to run MX Linux on it anyway. Well, after reformatting the drive and installing Linux on it, the battery still showed up as not charging.
No problem, wasn't expecting it to charge anyway.
But now I purchased a brand new battery for 38.00 dollars.
Installed the battery about 6 hours ago ... still dead as a doornail with no charge.
Does anyone have experience with this?

The laptop has its original Vaio charging cord.
The original Sony battery has 11.1 Volt ... so does the new one.latest?d=yIl2AUoC8zA latest?i=feY0SFgFpMw:IB4BOOZJu4Y:F7zBnMy latest?i=feY0SFgFpMw:IB4BOOZJu4Y:V_sGLiP latest?d=qj6IDK7rITs latest?i=feY0SFgFpMw:IB4BOOZJu4Y:gIN9vFwfeY0SFgFpMw
