install programs to a different partition

I would like to install a program onto a different partition from my home drive. My current home drive is 465 GiB on sda4 and I have a 1.26 TiB partition on sda5,I could shrink the one and expand the other which would give me more space on sda4 or can I install the programs into sda5 with a link in sda4. Which is better. Please respond with simple instructions as I am relatively new at doing things in command line in ubuntu.

Thanks
