configuring linksys wrt54g router as a bridge

I have a wrt54g router configured as a bridge a long while ago and I had to reconfigure it because it stopped working as a bridge. I reset the router and tried to set it up as a bridge, but was unable to connect to it. It works fine as a router/gateway. The network is wired as linksys befsr41 to wrt54g. In the wrt54g configuration, I set router, not gateway, and not a dhcp server. On the router/gateway page, there are gateway ip, the router ip and ip mask. I looked in the befsr41 and used its gateway ip, a mask of 255.255.255.0 and a local ip address in the befsr41's ip address range 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.150.
