ElementaryOS doesn't install well on my USB, always a new issue with booting.

I'm trying to create a bootable persistent USB for elementary OS that I can boot on several PCs I own. Online everyone is talking like its the easiest thing in the world but it's proving to be anything but lol
I start by creating a bootable USB install using Rufus of the latest elementaryOS version, then boot to it and attempt to do a fresh install on a second USB. If I do this on my main pc then it succeeds and is bootable, but only on that pc, on my other desktop and 3 laptops that I have tried I just get a basic command shell or the USB doesn't show up at all and will not boot no matter what.
When I tried to do the install on my laptop, it said success, but then once again did not boot. It seems as though it will only work on my primary PC. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm at my wits end here, have been trying for 3 days and any assistance would mean the world. Thank you!
