GEDIT files read only. Need read/write

A little history. I use Linux for distributed computing only on the BOINC client so even after years I'm still pretty much a newb. My last Ubuntu (16.04) install killed the SSD after years of abuse so I decided to update to Ubuntu 20.04. My problem is I can only get gedit to open xml files in read only mode. I've searched the net but have found no solutions. With 16.04 all I had to do was right click the file, open with gedit, make the edits I wanted and save. I can't get 20.04 to do that so it makes the OS useless for me. Opening the files in a terminal window to edit would be a huge PITA so I'm hoping there is some simple solution that I'm missing that will allow me to edit the files like I could in 16.04.
