Gentoo and GUI

I installed
icewm, xdm and display-manager
I used rc-update display-manager start
and
cheked /etc/conf.d/display-manager to have the DISPLAYMANAGER="xdm"
Yet, no reboot or restart of the xdm process is helping me to use the icewm gui
Your help will be appreciated
