can't access camera sdcard anymore

I've been doing this for years, pop out camera sdcard, plug sdcard into card reader, access it in dolphin, remove pics, vids.

Now on all my slack boxes current and stable, fdisk says 'no medium found', messages shows /dev/sdc, no partitions, there were pics on it, camera works fine.

Workaround is cli gphoto2. I'd like to know why I can no longer access sdcard through card reader, I didn't do anything different with sdcard, and if it's a sdcard format issue, what's good fs for the sdcard if redoing its format will help but I suppose it's probably bound to having be vfat?
