Mahomes: 'Only record I have my eyes set on breaking' is going 20-0
Patrick Mahomes is already locked in on the 2021 season and his latest goal isn't just another Super Bowl trophy.
"The only record I have my eyes set on breaking, which would be new this year, is going 20-0," the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback said to Kayla Nicole of Bleacher Report, per NFL.com's Adam Maya.
Mahomes is referring to the new 17-game regular season. To get to 20 wins, a team would have to go undefeated through their first 17 games, then remain victorious through the divisional round, conference championship, and Super Bowl.
"That's not really a record to be broken, I guess you would say. But I think 19-0 is the record right now, so being able to go 20-0, to be the first one to do that, that would be awesome," Mahomes said.
The 1972 Miami Dolphins are the only team to record a perfect season, going 17-0. The New England Patriots went 18-0 in 2007 but lost to the New York Giants in the Super Bowl.
The Chiefs have reached the past two Super Bowls, winning the Lombardi Trophy in 2019 before falling short in Super Bowl LIV in February.
