Titans haven’t approached Tannehill about restructuring contract

Ryan Tannehill says Tennessee Titans general manager Jon Robinson has still not approached him to restructure his contract.

"That's up to Jon," Tannehill said Thursday, according to the Nashville Tennessean's Ben Arthur. "He's going to have to figure that out if that's something we want to do as an organization. I don't know. It's above my pay grade. If he comes to me, then we'll have that conversation then."

The Titans are considered contenders to land Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones. However, Tennessee currently has just $3.7 million available in cap space, according to Spotrac. Accommodating Jones' $15.3 million in guaranteed salary and $23 million cap hit would require the team to do some salary gymnastics.

Converting some of Tannehill's $24.5 million annual salary into a signing bonus for next season could free up close to $15.6 million in cap space. The 32-year-old signal-caller signed a four-year, $118 million contract in 2020.

Adding Jones would provide more experience for a young Titans receiving group.

Tennessee lost two of its top three passing targets to free agency in wideout Corey Davis and tight end Jonnu Smith. The club added free-agent Josh Reynolds and selected Dez Fitzpatrick and Racey McMath in the 2021 draft.

While the Titans still appear interested in obtaining the former All-Pro wideout, their receiving corps, led by Pro Bowl pass-catcher A.J. Brown, excites Tannehill.

"It's going to be a team effort and details by us to make sure we do everything we can to put him in good positions and execute when we get there," Tannehill said of Brown's production.
