xsane spurious I/O errors

Using xsane, on Mint 20 with an HP M477fnw via hplip, I am getting a "Failed to start scanner: Error during device I/O'error popup every time (or almost) that I scan a page in flatbed mode.
In fact, the scan works fine, but having to dismiss the popup each time really slows down my workflow.
The popup must be dismissed before the next page can be scanned.
Is there a way to suppress these popups? Alternatively, anyone seen this and know how to fix the issue?latest?d=yIl2AUoC8zA latest?i=94X5HaHH-8k:vNLV6lzj9mI:F7zBnMy latest?i=94X5HaHH-8k:vNLV6lzj9mI:V_sGLiP latest?d=qj6IDK7rITs latest?i=94X5HaHH-8k:vNLV6lzj9mI:gIN9vFw94X5HaHH-8k
