Hamilton police blocked off Main Street Saturday for a vigil in front of city hall honouring the family killed in London, Ontario.

The 1 p.m. vigil in Hamilton corresponded with the funeral for four members of the Afzaal-Salman family who were killed in what police are calling a hate-motivated, Islamophobic attack.

Three generations of the family, 15 year-old Yumna Salman, her 44-year-old mother Madiha Salman, her 74-year old grandmother and 46-year old father Salman Afzaal, were killed while walking last weekend when they were struck by a driver who police believe targeted them because they are Muslim.

Nine-year-old Fayez was seriously injured and remains in hospital.

About 300 people attended the event, hosted by the Muslim Council of Greater Hamilton, representing the nine area mosques.

The event ended with traditional prayers and a special prayer for the family.

In London, a funeral procession and a public outdoor service paid tribute to the Afzaal-Salman family.

The family is set to be buried at the Islamic Cemetery of London in a private ceremony later Saturday.
