The Burlington Fire Department says one person was taken to hospital following an apartment fire early this morning (Sunday, July 4).

Fire crews were called to a high-rise on Claridge Road at 1:10 a.m., after receiving 911 calls.

Firefighters attended a unit on the first floor where they reportedly discovered smoke and flames in the kitchen.

The fire department said one woman was inside the unit at the time of the blaze and was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.

Her condition is not believed to be serious.

The blaze was extinguished, however, damage to the unit is estimated at around $5,000.

Firefighters say careless smoking is the suspected cause of the fire.

Cigarettes can smolder between cushions for hours before igniting," reads a safety message from the fire department.

Check couches and chairs for cigarettes that may have fallen between the cushions."

As a result of the civilian injury the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office has been contacted about this incident.

A total of 23 firefighters and eight fire trucks attended the scene.

Fire crews remained at the high-rise for one hour.
